The Remedial Learning Program was introduced by the Government of Rwanda to support
learners who are lagging behind academically and help them attain grade-level proficiency. As a
partner in education, MS Foundation aims to contribute to the success of this program by
focusing on foundational skills, particularly in Kinyarwanda at the lower primary level, and also
strengthening teachers’ capacity in remedial pedagogy and inclusive education practices. In this
regard, MS Foundation provided training to the schools it partners with.
The training was titled “Remedial Refresher Training” This training took place in May 6 Th
,2026 at GS Ste Famille and May 13 Th , 2026 at GS Kimisange. It was attended by 19 teachers
who teach Kinyarwanda in the lower primary classes (P1, P2, and P3). Those teachers were
trained by Executive Secretary of Foundation. Among them, 9 were from GS Sainte Famille and
10 from GS Kimisange. The training was organized based on the requests and needs expressed
by these teachers.
At GS Kimisange, the training was officially opened by the head teacher of GS Kimisange, who
began by thanking MS Foundation for the partnership and for the valuable initiative of training
teachers. He also appreciated the teachers for their full participation in the training.
On the side of the Foundation, Madam Solange Mukayiranga, Founder & CEO of the
Foundation, also thanked the school for the continued partnership and good collaboration the
school has demonstrated. She further expressed her appreciation for the teachers’ active
participation in the remedial training.
The training had the following objectives:
1. To explain ways of supporting learners who need additional assistance so that they can
reach the required competencies.
2. To identify the key activities involved in supporting learners with learning difficulties.
3. To analyze the steps followed in preparing a remedial support program.
4. To teach strategies for handling classes with learners who require different kinds of
support.
Together with the teachers, discussions were held on some of the key signs that indicate a learner
may have difficulties in learning, with particular focus on reading and writing skills in
Kinyarwanda (literacy).
Among the achievements, teachers emphasized that early identification of learners with reading
and writing difficulties, combined with timely and individualized support, can greatly improve
effective learning outcomes. They noted that this approach would reduce the number of
learners needing remedial programs at the end of the school year and help learners progress
confidently to the next grade with the expected academic performance.
The teachers appreciated receiving training in small groups at the school, because it helped them
understand better and gave them enough time to share ideas about what they had been trained on.
